Known Blackboard Errors
Posted by Cameron Rodish on 03 October 2016 08:26 AM

Attachment Conversion errors showing for some uploaded student documents. (10/3)

  • Information requested in the ticket:
    • Course/Assignment
    • Student's Name
    • Date/Time of upload
    • Browser used by the student to upload
    • Word Processing software used by the student
    • Screenshot of the error, if possible
  • UPDATE (10/5) - The System Office is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it. There is no workaround at this time beyond waiting for the file conversion to complete or downloading the file and editing/grading it in a word processing program outside of Blackboard.
  • No further ticket submissions are needed at this time.

Discussion Board forums are not able to be viewed by the instructor. (10/3)

  • From the System Office (10/4): The workaround is for instructors to remove the restrictions on the forum. Once the date or other restrictions are removed, the instructor can enter it and make changes. The problem is the students can also enter it.

Here's an addition to the workaround that still keeps students out. It relies on using the "manage" option for the discussion board, and changing all the users with role "Participant" to instead have the role "Blocked". The blocked users will still see the forum listed in the discussions, but when selecting it they will get the access denied message. But unblocked users (like the forum managers) can enter it.

    1. Enter the course
    2. Enter "Tools" then "Discussion Board"
    3. Hover your mouse over the title for the forum then click the "options menu" icon (the circle with a "v" in it) that appears.
    4. Select "Manage" to see a list of all the people who have access to the forum
    5. If you have a large class, click the option to "show all".
    6. Click the checkbox in the column header to select everyone in the course.
    7. You may want to deselect the checkbox for appropriate managers for the forum whom you want to have continued access.
    8. Select "Edit Role"
    9. Select "Blocked".

Just remember that after making your editing changes and putting any restrictions back in place, you will also have to go back into the "manage" menu and change all the people with the "Blocked" role back to "Participant" for them to enter the discussion forum.

Blackboard Scheduled Outage
Posted by Cameron Rodish on 16 September 2016 10:57 AM

From the VCCS ITS Team:

Blackboard has issued a security advisory that makes it important that we upgrade Blackboard Learn.

This outage has been scheduled for Saturday, October 1 from 6pm to midnight. While we would not normally schedule such an upgrade during the semester, the security concerns require that we do so. At the same time, this release also contains fixes for a significant number of issues.
